SUMMARY:Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:After nearly 130 years of operations\, Wing Noodles has closed its doors. The family business that introduced Québec to fortune cookies several decades ago leaves behind a rich and layered history\, the discovering of which might spark joy comparable only to the experience of chewing into a Wing’s almond cookie for the first time. JIA’s newest exhibition dives into the legacy Wing’s has built and how this legacy came to be\, spanning the arrival of the Hee Chong Lee in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu at the end of the 19th century\, the Chinese Head Tax and Exclusion years\, and all that Wing’s came to be and represent for the family\, patrons\, and community it nurtured. \n\n\n\nWing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown invites you to dig deeper into this history and discover the stories of spaces\, people\, and objects at the very heart of Wing’s. \n\n\n\nBeware: its contents might lead you down a rabbit hole journey into research topics as precise as networks of Chinese restaurants in Eastern North America or as large as heritage preservation. If this were to happen to you\, our Fortunes and Futures talks series might provide some answers. 👀At Chinatown House starting June 6\, 2026.Saturdays & Sundays 11am–4pm\, rain or shine.

SUMMARY:Wing's and the Lee Family: A Chinatown History
DESCRIPTION:Fortunes & Futures (1/3)Curated Talks and Deep Dives into Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown \n\n\n\nThis first talk focuses on Wing’s early history\, the beginnings of Montréal’s Chinatown\, and the acts of solidarity that prevailed within a community targeted by a Head Tax and the Chinese Exclusion Act. \n\n\n\nCarol F. Lee will deliver an illustrated lecture that tells the intertwined stories of the Wing’s businesses and the Lee family in Montreal from the turn of the 20th century until 1964. Wing’s began as an importer\, grocery\, and herbal medicine store and pivoted after World War II to manufacturing noodles\, fortune cookies\, and sauces. Through the decades in Montreal Chinatown\, the common themes of the business and the family have been hard work\, perseverance through adversity\, family solidarity\, and commitment to the community. \n\n\n\nwith Lee family historian Carol F. SUMMARY:The Wing's Collection: Archiving Chinatown's Memory Through Objects
DESCRIPTION:Fortunes & Futures (2/3)Curated Talks and Deep Dives into Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown \n\n\n\nThis second talk focuses on objects that tell stories forgotten or never made public in the first place\, heritage conservation at the local level\, and the Wing’s Collection (held by the MEM—Centre des mémoires montréalaises\, donation from Gilbert Lee\, Wing Noodles Ltd). \n\n\n\nThe idea of the Wing’s Collection sprouted when Gilbert Lee\, co-owner of Wings\, mandated his friend Jean-Philippe Riopel\, who’s also a Montréal guide and museologist\, to create a collection made up of 5000 lots of objects closely tied to the history of the Lee family\, of Wings\, and of Montréal’s Chinatown. This work would be taken on by new non-profit Objets de Mémoire\, groupe d’action muséologique\, and its collaborators. After 4 years of meticulous work\, the Wings Collection has been donated to the MEM—Centre des mémoires montréalaises by Gilbert Lee. In this talk\, Jean-Philippe Riopel shares his journey and walks us through the incredible story of the Wings Collection’s creation and its preservation as a heritage collection\, while also presenting some of its most interesting objects. \n\n\n\nWith Jean-Philippe Riopel\, founder of the museological action group Objets de mémoire \n\n\n\nRegister Here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFortunes & Futures 1/3 \n\n\n\nFortunes & Futures 3/3

SUMMARY:Curating the Past - Documenting the Present - Imagining the Future
DESCRIPTION:Fortunes & Futures (3/3)Curated Talks and Deep Dives into Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown \n\n\n\nThis last talk focuses on community history\, documentary filmmaking\, and the power of storytelling. \n\n\n\nCurator and filmmaker Karen Cho will reflect on the process of transforming nearly 130 years of history into the living exhibition “Wing Noodles – The Heart of Chinatown” as well as the process of capturing Wing Noodles’ final weeks of production and the future of Wing’s legacy in a forthcoming documentary film. Focusing on the era from 1964 onwards\, where Wings occupied one of Chinatown’s most historic and iconic buildings\, this presentation will also challenge us to reflect on how the past can inform the future for the Wing’s block of Chinatown.  \n\n\n\nWith Karen Cho\, documentary filmmaker + curator for the Wing’s exhibition \n\n\n\nRegister Here \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFortunes & Futures 1/3 \n\n\n\nFortunes & Futures 2/3
