SUMMARY:Fireside Chat with Chris Lau and Richmond Lam
DESCRIPTION:Join photographers Chris Lau and Richmond Lam for an intimate discussion about their creative process for the current exhibition at Chinatown House\, Made in Chinatown II: Portraits of Montréal Chinatown businesses. This will be your chance to hear all about their inspirations and stories for this project\, from reaching out to the iconic businesses that are portrayed all the way to setting up inside Chinatown House. The follow-up to the highly successful Made in Chinatown I portraits which were postered right on Clark Street\, this second phase of the Made in Chinatown project dives deeper into Chinatown legacy businesses as spaces of intergenerational cultural transmission and exchange. \n\n\n\nOur Fireside Chat series provides the space to meet the people who help craft our exhibitions\, giving centre stage to the stories that bind us together. \n\n\n\nChris Lau is a professional photographer\, videographer and visual artist specializing in documentary photojournalistic portraiture that reveals people’s realities and authenticity through an anti-oppressive lens. He believes photography has the power to change people’s attitudes and lives. In 2023\, Chris produced a documentary portrait series\, titled ‘Out of the Shadows’\, which creatively used light and shadow to recognize people living on the margins of society (https://chrislauphoto.ca/out-of-the-shadows). \n\n\n\nRichmond Lam is a portrait and documentary photographer based in Montréal\, originally from Hong Kong\, with formative years spent in London. His practice is grounded in a quiet\, empathetic gaze—attuned to subtle gestures and unspoken atmospheres. Working fluidly between personal and commissioned projects\, Richmond creates intimate\, psychologically rich portraits that explore presence\, identity\, and place.

Influenced by global migration shifts caused by factors like the 1997 Hong Kong handover to China\, in the span of a few decades\, Richmond was transformed from a semi-rural\, sleepy community into one of the most hyper-diverse cities on the planet. The Golden Village explores this monumental change through the lens of Richmond’s Asian-themed malls\, taking us inside these vibrant spaces where every shop has a story and where culture\, commerce and community form a new sense of home.Inside these Golden Village malls\, everything from Buddhist temples\, to Cantonese Radio stations to Egg Waffle and Snail Noodle shops can be found. It is in these spaces where seniors meet to exercise\, children gather for music lessons\, and where everyday activities like a trip to the butcher become moments of connection and belonging. In Richmond\, The Chinese God of Fortune stands in for the quintessential mall Santa\, and the Night Market is one of the largest open-air food courts in the world.A celebration of the mall as a “third place\,” The Golden Village is an intimate and wondrous portrait of a city that is in constant flux.

SUMMARY:Morris Lum "Tong Yan Gaai" Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join Morris Lum on December 14th at the Chinatown House for an intimate discussion and book signing of his new photography book\, Tong Yan Gaai. Lum’s new book documents different parts of our Chinatowns over the years and through its changing landscapes. How much has Chinatown changed? Lum will be around all day to discuss his artistic process as well as any burning questions you might have around his work and to exchange stories in the heart of Montreal Chinatown. The Yep-Riopel House Exhibition documenting the history of the 116 De la Gauchetière building will also be up for its last day in our gallery space. Come and visit! \n\n\n\nMorris Lum\, Tong Yan Gaai\, book cover\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, Chinese Canadian photographer Morris Lum (born 1983) has embarked on an extensive exploration of the Chinatown communities scattered across Canada and the United States. Focusing on the architecture and evolution of these enclaves\, Lum delves into how “Chinese” identity is shaped and expressed through their structures. Using a large-format camera\, he has captured Chinatowns in cities such as Victoria\, Vancouver\, Calgary\, Edmonton\, Winnipeg\, Toronto\, Ottawa\, Montreal\, Chicago\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, New York City and Boston. Through his objective lens\, Lum chronicles the rapid transformations these communities face\, documenting the shifting architectural and economic landscapes. His colorful photographs offer a poignant visual record\, spotlighting both historical and modern-day cultural landmarks—small family-owned businesses\, iconic Chinese restaurants and vital community organizations—that define these neighborhoods.Morris Lum is a Trinidadian-born photographer and artist whose work explores the complex hybridity of the Chinese-Canadian experience through photography\, form\, and documentary practices. Lum’s work has been exhibited and screened across Canada and the United States. Currently\, he is focused on a cross–North American project examining the transformation of Chinatowns\, capturing the evolving architectural and cultural landscapes of these Communities. Morris is an Assistant Professor in the Visual Studies Department of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design\, University of Toronto. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis event will follow Morris Lum’s Book Launch happening on December 11th at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in partnership with the Gail and Stephen A. The Chinatown community has rallied together to not only celebrate the Lee Family’s contribution but launch a campaign to conserve the legacy of this iconic enterprise and its historical building.  \n\n\n\nOriginally founded in 1897 under the name of Wing Lung\, this Chinese enterprise has not only served numerous Chinese restaurants and grocery stores which created a broader community network within Montréal\, Québec\, and beyond\, it has also provided employment\, including immigration possibilities\, for generations of Chinese migrants\, through the darkest chapters of Chinese-Canadian history.  \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, following months of intense community mobilisation to protect the building\, the Québec government granted the Wing Noodles building heritage status. The Chinatown Round Table and the JIA Foundation are pleased to invite you to personally come to wish Garnet\, Gilbert and George a very happy and well-deserved retirement at a community banquet on December 5\, 2025 at the Ruby Rouge Restaurant. SUMMARY:Untold Stories: Chinese-Canadian Veterans (Double Film Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Chinatown House for a special double bill highlighting the untold histories of Chinese-Canadians’ participation in the war effort. Through a deeply personal approach\, these two films uphold the courage of these men in a period entrenched in anti-Chinese racism\, and bring to light details that few have acknowledged in the annals of the Allied victory story.  \n\n\n\nFollowed by a special Q&A in presence of both directors! \n\n\n\nSunday\, June 1st 2025Chinatown House – 116\, rue de la Gauchetière WestFree Admission3pm – 6pm \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of Ours : The Story of Private Fred Lee (Documentary\, 2023) \n\n\n\nDirector: Jack Gin \n\n\n\nLength: 40 minutes \n\n\n\nEnglish with subtitles in Chinese \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\nOne of Ours follows the life of Private Fred Lee\, a young man from Kamloops\, BC\, who joined the Rocky Mountain Rangers in 1916 and disappeared at the Western Front. Presumed killed at the Battle of Hill 70 in France\, Fred’s body was never recovered; his life was forgotten for 100 years. The deep research\, travel\, and countless interviews that shaped this film have brought Fred Lee’s story to life\, making sure he is forgotten no more.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJack Gin is a Corporate Director\, independent filmmaker\, and philanthropist. After selling his TSX-listed company and retiring shortly afterwards\, he became a philanthropist and award-winning filmmaker. His short documentary “Finding Fred Lee 1.0” gained national recognition\, moving viewers emotionally. Jack continues to work on sequels\, aiming to create thought-provoking educational films. He also helped establish The Frederick Lee Walkway and the Hill 70 Memorial in France. He donates significantly across the community through the Jack and Sylvia Gin Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\nRelics of Love and War (Documentary\, 2023) \n\n\n\nDirector: Keith Lock \n\n\n\nLength: 45 minutes \n\n\n\nEnglish with no subtitles \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\nThe venerated Chinese Canadian filmmaker Keith Lock narrates the story of how his mother married his father in Australia\, who was training with other Chinese Canadian veteran volunteers for the top secret suicide mission\, Operation Oblivion. This incredible story is set against the backdrop of the Second World War\, a time when Chinese Canadians could not vote\, swim in pools\, or hire white women for their businesses. Though familiar with his family history\, Lock wasn’t sure how to tell their story\, since many of the participants had long passed. Motivated by the desire to tell it right\, Lock’s documentary essay uses archival imagery (much previously unseen) to bring the history to light. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKeith Lock\, Canada’s first Chinese Canadian filmmaker\, works in experimental as well as dramatic and documentary films. Keith was the cinematographer for Michael Snow’s Two Sides to Every Story (1974)\, voted one of TIFF’s 150 Essential Works of Canadian cinema in 2017. His film\, Everything Everywhere Again Alive\, was selected as one of Jim Shedden’s 100 best Canadian films of all time and released on Blu-ray by Black Zero in 2021. In 2022\, he was the inaugural recipient of the Reel Asian Film Festival’s trailblazing Fire Horse Award.

SUMMARY:Unveiling Chinese Presence and History in Québec City’s Lost Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:Starting in the late 19th century\, Chinatowns developed in many Canadian cities. Yet today\, many have disappeared with little record of their existence. Québec City was once home to one such Chinatown\, now largely forgotten. Emerging in the 1930’s as a small concentrated street of Chinese residents\, the Chinatown grew by the 1960’s into a vibrant network of restaurants\, businesses\, and institutions spanning the city. However\, by the 1970’s\, urban renewal projects and changing policies pushed Chinese families and businesses out\, dispersing them into the suburbs and other Canadian cities. Today\, few physical elements remain of the Chinatown\, and little is documented about its history. Québec City’s Chinatown is lost\, both physically and within the collective memory of the city. Interviews with former residents and archival research will reveal its vibrant community history and stories. \n\n\n\nMadeleine Wong is a recent graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on Canadian Chinatowns and Chinese restaurants\, examining their role in creating spaces of community and belonging within the city.
