DESCRIPTION:Join us 💥this Saturday💥 for a fascinating historical and genealogical account of Montreal’s Chinatown from the 1890s through the 1920s\, told by Carol F. Lee through the lens of the Lee families’ history. \n\n\n\nThis event is free! From 11 AM to 2 PM at Chinatown House – 116 de la Gauchetière W. \n\n\n\nCarol F. Lee’s grandfather immigrated to Montreal in 1893 from I Gong (Dai Kong) village in Toisan (Taishan) county. Her grandmother and their eldest son came to Montreal in 1909. Carol’s grandfather and great-uncle came from the same village as the Lee family of Wing Lung & Co. and WIng’s Noodles\, and the two families stayed in touch across the decades in Montreal and Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nCarol’s father and Carol herself were born in Montreal. Her family lived in Pointe Claire until they moved to southern California in 1966. Starting at an early age\, Carol has been gathering stories about her family’s history from her parents\, uncles\, and others in Montreal. She majored in history at Yale and also studied at Oxford and Yale Law School. \n\n\n\nFor the last two decades\, she has spent a great deal of time adding to the oral histories by researching official documents\, historic newspaper and photo databases\, articles and books.

Presumed killed at the Battle of Hill 70 in France\, Fred’s body was never recovered; his life was forgotten for 100 years. The deep research\, travel\, and countless interviews that shaped this film have brought Fred Lee’s story to life\, making sure he is forgotten no more.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJack Gin is a Corporate Director\, independent filmmaker\, and philanthropist. After selling his TSX-listed company and retiring shortly afterwards\, he became a philanthropist and award-winning filmmaker. His short documentary “Finding Fred Lee 1.0” gained national recognition\, moving viewers emotionally. Jack continues to work on sequels\, aiming to create thought-provoking educational films. He also helped establish The Frederick Lee Walkway and the Hill 70 Memorial in France. He donates significantly across the community through the Jack and Sylvia Gin Foundation. \n\n\n\n\n\nRelics of Love and War (Documentary\, 2023) \n\n\n\nDirector: Keith Lock \n\n\n\nLength: 45 minutes \n\n\n\nEnglish with no subtitles \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSynopsis \n\n\n\nThe venerated Chinese Canadian filmmaker Keith Lock narrates the story of how his mother married his father in Australia\, who was training with other Chinese Canadian veteran volunteers for the top secret suicide mission\, Operation Oblivion. This incredible story is set against the backdrop of the Second World War\, a time when Chinese Canadians could not vote\, swim in pools\, or hire white women for their businesses. Though familiar with his family history\, Lock wasn’t sure how to tell their story\, since many of the participants had long passed. Motivated by the desire to tell it right\, Lock’s documentary essay uses archival imagery (much previously unseen) to bring the history to light. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKeith Lock\, Canada’s first Chinese Canadian filmmaker\, works in experimental as well as dramatic and documentary films. Keith was the cinematographer for Michael Snow’s Two Sides to Every Story (1974)\, voted one of TIFF’s 150 Essential Works of Canadian cinema in 2017. His film\, Everything Everywhere Again Alive\, was selected as one of Jim Shedden’s 100 best Canadian films of all time and released on Blu-ray by Black Zero in 2021. In 2022\, he was the inaugural recipient of the Reel Asian Film Festival’s trailblazing Fire Horse Award.

JIA moved into the ground floor of this heritage building in January 2025 and has since started its cultural programs and community organizing here\, at the heart of historic Chinatown.   \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is free of charge and will be open to the public 3 days a week: Fridays through Sundays\, 11 AM to 4 PM\, from April until September.

SUMMARY:Building\, Reshaping\, Remodeling\, 13 Years of Chinatown a Photographic Series
DESCRIPTION:Morris Lum is a Trinidadian born photographer/artist whose work explores the hybrid nature of the Chinese-Canadian community through photography\, form and documentary practices. His work also examines the ways in which Chinese history is represented in the media and archival material. Morris’ work has been exhibited and screened across Canada\, the United States. \n\n\n\nMorris is currently working on a cross North America project that looks specifically at the transformation of Chinatowns. \n\n\n\nJoin Morris Lum in discussion about his Chinatown | Tong Yan Gaai photographic series that documents Chinatowns across Canada and the United States. Over the last decade Morris has focused and directed attention towards the functionality of the Chinatown and to explore the generational context of how “Chinese” identity is expressed in these structural enclaves. Armed with a large format camera\, Morris has documented Chinatowns in Victoria\, Vancouver\, Calgary\, Edmonton\, Winnipeg\, Toronto\, Ottawa\, Montreal\, Chicago\, Oakland\, Seattle\, Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, Manhattan\, New York and Boston. The talk will overview the progression of the body of work and will hint at the next phases of the series. \n\n\n\nThis conference is part six of six of our partnership with the University of Montreal’s Centre d’études asiatiques. SUMMARY:Unveiling Chinese Presence and History in Québec City’s Lost Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:Starting in the late 19th century\, Chinatowns developed in many Canadian cities. Yet today\, many have disappeared with little record of their existence. Québec City was once home to one such Chinatown\, now largely forgotten. Emerging in the 1930’s as a small concentrated street of Chinese residents\, the Chinatown grew by the 1960’s into a vibrant network of restaurants\, businesses\, and institutions spanning the city. However\, by the 1970’s\, urban renewal projects and changing policies pushed Chinese families and businesses out\, dispersing them into the suburbs and other Canadian cities. Today\, few physical elements remain of the Chinatown\, and little is documented about its history. Québec City’s Chinatown is lost\, both physically and within the collective memory of the city. Interviews with former residents and archival research will reveal its vibrant community history and stories. \n\n\n\nMadeleine Wong is a recent graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on Canadian Chinatowns and Chinese restaurants\, examining their role in creating spaces of community and belonging within the city.

Recognized with a medal from the National Assembly\, Riopel has been honored for his dedicated efforts in safeguarding the historical memory of Chinatown and contributing significantly to national history. \n\n\n\nGilbert Lee\, the owner of the Wings Company\, commissioned Jean-Philippe to establish and direct a collection of more than 1000 objects related to the history of the Wings company and Chinatown since the beginning of the 20th century.  This collection is now managed by the Objets des mémoires collective\, a museological action group that brings together professionals from the museum and heritage sectors to preserve material heritage at risk of disappearance.

DESCRIPTION:For over a century\, diasporic communities in Chinatown have fought the tides of erasure by building a constellation of rafts in all manner of forms: Clan Associations\, dance troupes\, shelters\, Cantonese opera performances\, language schools\, seniors’ homes\, temples\, restaurants\, and more. This exhibition builds upon the inaugural year of the JIA Foundation’s community advocacy\, festivals\, art\, and storytelling\, done alongside the Chinatown Reimagined Forum’s three days of sharing and mobilization. This year’s lecture and exhibition series aims to build bridges between grassroots organizations and academic communities\, creating a platform for discussion on the evolving movements and future possibilities for Chinatown. \n\n\n\nLaunch event: January 16th at 5pm.

Join Parker Mah for an informal talk and viewing session in which participants will be privy to archival and family photographs from both institutional and personal collections\, some never before seen\, that tell the story of daily life in a bygone Chinatown. \n\n\n\nParker Mah 馬世聰 is a fourth-generation Chinese Montrealer of Toisanese descent\, based in Tio’tia:ke. Artist and community organizer\, he also acted as curator and artistic director for two major site-based Chinatown exhibitions produced by the MEM.

SUMMARY:Reflections: A Digital Memory Living Lab in Chinatown
DESCRIPTION:As new technology continues to shape our lives\, how can we use these AI tools to envision a society that reflects our shared values? \n\n\n\n“Reflections: A Digital Memory Workshop in Chinatown (Montreal)” is a 6-hour workshop facilitated by Chloé Lee\, creator of Temporal World (SXSW 2023). In the workshop\, she shares her creative process\, guiding groups and individuals to reflect on their communities through writing exercises\, interviews and experimentation with AI image generation. The workshop is for anyone: people of all skill levels\, backgrounds and ages\, and all needed technology will be provided. We will reflect on what community means to each of us. By the end of the day\, our creations will be installed and shown in a collective 3D interactive virtual gallery built with Unity.
