SUMMARY:Exhibition Catalogue Launch - Maison Yep-Riopel
DESCRIPTION:What do patriot Augustin-Norbert Morin\, the Chinese freemasons\, and the Yep family have in common? \n\n\n\nThey all lived at 116-118 de la Gauchetière West\, a building that has witnessed many acts of resistance over the centuries\, the most recent one having led to the building’s designation as a protected heritage site. This fascinating history has been showcased in the JIA Foundation’s inaugural exhibition\, Maison Yep-Riopel: A Layered History of Resistance and Belonging\, which has been displayed at Chinatown House since the end of March 2025. \n\n\n\nAs the exhibition is nearing its end\, join us for the launch of the official exhibition catalogue\, filled with additional insights about the exhibition’s creation\, testimonies from people involved and visitors\, and recollections from the Fireside chats at the hearth of Chinatown House. \n\n\n\nThe launch will also feature a discussion between Sandy Yep\, Bernard Vallée\, and Lan Yee\, who all played a role in researching and setting up the exhibition. They will share behind-the-scenes stories about the exhibition and answer all your burning questions. \n\n\n\nLight refreshments will be served. \n\n\n\nIf you would like your very own copy of the catalogue\, it will be available on site to all those who donate 60$ or more to the JIA Foundation. All proceeds will help support JIA’s cultural programming at Chinatown House. \n\n\n\nDate: Saturday\, November 22\, 2025Time: 5pm-7pmAddress: Chinatown House\, 116 De La Gauchetière Ouest

SUMMARY:Celebrating Wing Noodles' Legacy: A Community Fundraising Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Wing Noodles\, a cherished Chinatown landmark and important social-economic motor for Montreal’s Chinatown\, will be closing its doors shortly. The Chinatown community has rallied together to not only celebrate the Lee Family’s contribution but launch a campaign to conserve the legacy of this iconic enterprise and its historical building.  \n\n\n\nOriginally founded in 1897 under the name of Wing Lung\, this Chinese enterprise has not only served numerous Chinese restaurants and grocery stores which created a broader community network within Montréal\, Québec\, and beyond\, it has also provided employment\, including immigration possibilities\, for generations of Chinese migrants\, through the darkest chapters of Chinese-Canadian history.  \n\n\n\nIn 2022\, following months of intense community mobilisation to protect the building\, the Québec government granted the Wing Noodles building heritage status. Wing’s block (designated as ‘Noyau-institutionnel-du-Quartier-chinois’ for its architectural and historical value) is also the site of one of the three anchor projects identified by the Chinatown community in the Community Proposal for Equitable Chinatown Development Beyond 2026. \n\n\n\nThe entire community salutes the contributions made by generations of the Lee family that has operated the business for over half a century. The Chinatown Round Table and the JIA Foundation are pleased to invite you to personally come to wish Garnet\, Gilbert and George a very happy and well-deserved retirement at a community banquet on December 5\, 2025 at the Ruby Rouge Restaurant. At the same time\, you will have a chance to share your wishes for the future of Wing’s building by contributing to the JIA Foundation’s fundraising campaign for a community-driven strategy to conserve this unique piece of Montréal’s Chinatown cultural heritage. SUMMARY:Morris Lum "Tong Yan Gaai" Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join Morris Lum on December 14th at the Chinatown House for an intimate discussion and book signing of his new photography book\, Tong Yan Gaai. Lum’s new book documents different parts of our Chinatowns over the years and through its changing landscapes. How much has Chinatown changed? Lum will be around all day to discuss his artistic process as well as any burning questions you might have around his work and to exchange stories in the heart of Montreal Chinatown. The Yep-Riopel House Exhibition documenting the history of the 116 De la Gauchetière building will also be up for its last day in our gallery space. Come and visit! \n\n\n\nMorris Lum\, Tong Yan Gaai\, book cover\, 2025.\n\n\n\n\nOver the past decade\, Chinese Canadian photographer Morris Lum (born 1983) has embarked on an extensive exploration of the Chinatown communities scattered across Canada and the United States. Focusing on the architecture and evolution of these enclaves\, Lum delves into how “Chinese” identity is shaped and expressed through their structures. Using a large-format camera\, he has captured Chinatowns in cities such as Victoria\, Vancouver\, Calgary\, Edmonton\, Winnipeg\, Toronto\, Ottawa\, Montreal\, Chicago\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles\, New York City and Boston. Through his objective lens\, Lum chronicles the rapid transformations these communities face\, documenting the shifting architectural and economic landscapes. His colorful photographs offer a poignant visual record\, spotlighting both historical and modern-day cultural landmarks—small family-owned businesses\, iconic Chinese restaurants and vital community organizations—that define these neighborhoods.Morris Lum is a Trinidadian-born photographer and artist whose work explores the complex hybridity of the Chinese-Canadian experience through photography\, form\, and documentary practices. Lum’s work has been exhibited and screened across Canada and the United States. Currently\, he is focused on a cross–North American project examining the transformation of Chinatowns\, capturing the evolving architectural and cultural landscapes of these Communities. Morris is an Assistant Professor in the Visual Studies Department of the Daniels Faculty of Architecture Landscape and Design\, University of Toronto. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nThis event will follow Morris Lum’s Book Launch happening on December 11th at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in partnership with the Gail and Stephen A. Jarislowsky Institute for Studies in Canadian Art. \n\n\n\nYou will be able to procure a copy of Morris Lum’s Tong Yan Gaai as well as a limited edition book bag designed by artist Karen Tam at the Book Signing by donating 60$ or more. Influenced by global migration shifts caused by factors like the 1997 Hong Kong handover to China\, in the span of a few decades\, Richmond was transformed from a semi-rural\, sleepy community into one of the most hyper-diverse cities on the planet. The Golden Village explores this monumental change through the lens of Richmond’s Asian-themed malls\, taking us inside these vibrant spaces where every shop has a story and where culture\, commerce and community form a new sense of home.Inside these Golden Village malls\, everything from Buddhist temples\, to Cantonese Radio stations to Egg Waffle and Snail Noodle shops can be found. It is in these spaces where seniors meet to exercise\, children gather for music lessons\, and where everyday activities like a trip to the butcher become moments of connection and belonging. In Richmond\, The Chinese God of Fortune stands in for the quintessential mall Santa\, and the Night Market is one of the largest open-air food courts in the world.A celebration of the mall as a “third place\,” The Golden Village is an intimate and wondrous portrait of a city that is in constant flux.

SUMMARY:Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 25\, join us at Chinatown House for a conversation with author Curtis Chin. His memoir\, Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant delves into his memories of his family’s Chinese restaurant\, located in the Cass Corridor in Detroit. \n\n\n\nCurtis Chin grew up in 1980s’ Detroit. As one of six kids\, he spent his childhood roaming the backstore of Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine\, the Chinese restaurant his great-grandfather started in the 1940s. As a young closeted Asian man at the height of the AIDS crisis\, the family restaurant was a place of refuge for him as well as for generations of Detroiters navigating their city’s economic collapse\, many of whom were decades-long regulars. Throughout Turtle Island\, Chinese restaurants are known for their affordable menus and long open hours. In that way\, Chung’s became a gathering spot for a diverse community to bond over egg rolls and spontaneous conversations. \n\n\n\nCurtis Chin is now bringing stories of his family’s restaurant on a Canadian tour. Don’t miss his stop at Chinatown House\, where our current exhibition focuses on legacy businesses in Montréal’s Chinatown. These businesses are more than restaurants\, herbal shops\, hair salons\, and art studios. They act as vital anchor points for a living\, vibrant community\, to gather in. \n\n\n\nThis event is free. No registration is required. \n\n\n\n🏠 Chinatown House (116 De La Gauchetière West)🪧 Saturday\, April 25 🕟 11am – 1pm \n\n\n\n\nEVERYTHING I LEARNED\, I LEARNED IN A CHINESE RESTAURANT \n\n\n\nABOUT CURTIS CHINA co-founder of the Asian American Writers’ Workshop in New York City\, Curtis Chin served as the non-profits’ first Executive Director. He went on to write comedy for network and cable TV before transitioning to social justice documentaries. Chin has screened his films at over 600 venues in twenty countries.
