DESCRIPTION:The JIA Foundation is inviting you to to the launch of our sophomore exhibition at Chinatown House starting Saturday\, January 17\, 2026. \n\n\n\nMade in Chinatown II tells the story of four legacy Chinatown businesses. In 2023\, Chris produced a documentary portrait series\, titled ‘Out of the Shadows’\, which creatively used light and shadow to recognize people living on the margins of society (https://chrislauphoto.ca/out-of-the-shadows). \n\n\n\nRichmond Lam is a portrait and documentary photographer based in Montréal\, originally from Hong Kong\, with formative years spent in London. His practice is grounded in a quiet\, empathetic gaze—attuned to subtle gestures and unspoken atmospheres. Working fluidly between personal and commissioned projects\, Richmond creates intimate\, psychologically rich portraits that explore presence\, identity\, and place. \n\n\n\nMarc Chanchaleun is a Montréal-based videographer and filmmaker working at the intersection of documentary and visual storytelling. His approach is grounded in observation and intention\, paying close attention to natural movement. Inspired by quiet moments\, he creates films that feel honest and human\, exploring identity and real-world presence through a cinematic lens. SUMMARY:Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, April 25\, join us at Chinatown House for a conversation with author Curtis Chin. His memoir\, Everything I Learned\, I Learned in a Chinese Restaurant delves into his memories of his family’s Chinese restaurant\, located in the Cass Corridor in Detroit. \n\n\n\nCurtis Chin grew up in 1980s’ Detroit. As one of six kids\, he spent his childhood roaming the backstore of Chung’s Cantonese Cuisine\, the Chinese restaurant his great-grandfather started in the 1940s. As a young closeted Asian man at the height of the AIDS crisis\, the family restaurant was a place of refuge for him as well as for generations of Detroiters navigating their city’s economic collapse\, many of whom were decades-long regulars. Throughout Turtle Island\, Chinese restaurants are known for their affordable menus and long open hours. In that way\, Chung’s became a gathering spot for a diverse community to bond over egg rolls and spontaneous conversations. \n\n\n\nCurtis Chin is now bringing stories of his family’s restaurant on a Canadian tour. Don’t miss his stop at Chinatown House\, where our current exhibition focuses on legacy businesses in Montréal’s Chinatown. These businesses are more than restaurants\, herbal shops\, hair salons\, and art studios. They act as vital anchor points for a living\, vibrant community\, to gather in. \n\n\n\nThis event is free. A former assistant to Michael Snow and Claude Jutra\, Keith Lock is the creator of a body of work that is unique in Quebec and deeply diverse\, combining experimental and documentary approaches in the service of fiction and even animation\, always with the primary goal of capturing what allows community life to emerge and endure. \n\n\n\nEach screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmaker. Thursday’s screening will be followed by a discussion between Keith Lock and three filmmakers from the Asiate en court competition at the Accès Asie Festival: Rui Ting Ji\, Gavin Seal\, and kimura-byol lemoine. SUMMARY:The Wing's Collection: Archiving Chinatown's Memory Through Objects
DESCRIPTION:Fortunes & Futures (2/3)Curated Talks and Deep Dives into Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown \n\n\n\nThis second talk focuses on objects that tell stories forgotten or never made public in the first place\, heritage conservation at the local level\, and the Wing’s Collection (held by the MEM—Centre des mémoires montréalaises\, donation from Gilbert Lee\, Wing Noodles Ltd).  \n\n\n\nThe idea of the Wing’s Collection sprouted when Gilbert Lee\, co-owner of Wings\, mandated his friend Jean-Philippe Riopel\, who’s also a Montréal guide and museologist\, to create a collection made up of 5000 lots of objects closely tied to the history of the Lee family\, of Wings\, and of Montréal’s Chinatown. This work would be taken on by new non-profit Objets de Mémoire\, groupe d’action muséologique\, and its collaborators. After 4 years of meticulous work\, the Wings Collection has been donated to the MEM—Centre des mémoires montréalaises by Gilbert Lee. DESCRIPTION:Fortunes & Futures (3/3)Curated Talks and Deep Dives into Wing Noodles: The Heart of Chinatown \n\n\n\nThis last talk focuses on community history\, documentary filmmaking\, and the power of storytelling. \n\n\n\nCurator and filmmaker Karen Cho will reflect on the process of transforming nearly 130 years of history into the living exhibition “Wing Noodles – The Heart of Chinatown” as well as the process of capturing Wing Noodles’ final weeks of production and the future of Wing’s legacy in a forthcoming documentary film.
