Book Launch & Author Talk – Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act
2025-10-05 / 18:00 – 20:00

Award-winning community historian, curator and author Catherine Clement will share the findings of her landmark project which excavated stories of what really happened during one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history.
Her book, The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act, is the first to explore the broad range of “human experiences” of exclusion as revealed through the stories of the many lives it touched. Crowdsourced from the fragments of memories of hundreds of Chinese Canadian families across Canada, including those from Montréal, as well as extensive and painstaking research in public and private/family archives, many stories and images are being shared publicly for the very first time.
The pages of her book reveal haunting tales of tragedy, loss and despair as well as powerful examples of courage, perseverance, and resilience. They chronicle the lives of ordinary people caught in extraordinary times.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear about this incredible public history project and the resulting book. Note: The author’s presentation will be conducted in English, but whisper French and Chinese translation will be available.
