A building is just brick and mortar until the people inhabiting its space give it memory and meaning.

Built before 1845, the history of Maison Yep- Riopel’s occupants includes figures of Quebec’s Patriotes movement and the Lower Canada Rebellions, Chinese benevolent societies who funded a Chinatown mutual-aid network and revolutions overseas, pioneer Chinese Canadian families, and a modern-day tenant who sparked a mass community mobilization to protect the heritage of the neighbourhood.

The back of the building houses the last remaining courtyard of Chinatown; the only piece of land in the area never to be paved or developed. It is here where artifacts depicting the layered history of a neighbourhood settled by French, Irish, Scottish, Jewish and Chinese people have been unearthed.

With links to changing political movements, figures who helped to settle and shape the neighbourhood, and residents who withstood displacement, the story of this building is one of resistance and belonging.

This exhibition looks at the layered history of Maison Yep-Riopel – a building that sits at the intersection of Chinatown’s past and future.
