The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion around the topic “The Golden Village to Gold Mountain: Making Home, Making Place” featuring Director Karen Cho alongside guests Joshua Frank (Cinematographer), Xi Feng (Editor), Yon Hsu, PhD. (Professor in the Social Science program at Marianopolis College) and Jessica Chen (JIA Foundation) moderated by Parker Mah (JIA Foundation).
The film is in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, with English subtitles.
The panel is in English with French whisper translation available.
FILM SYNOPSIS
The city of Richmond British Columbia has undergone one of the most significant and rapid demographic transformations in recent history. Influenced by global migration shifts caused by factors like the 1997 Hong Kong handover to China, in the span of a few decades, Richmond was transformed from a semi-rural, sleepy community into one of the most hyper-diverse cities on the planet.
The Golden Village explores this monumental change through the lens of Richmond’s Asian-themed malls, taking us inside these vibrant spaces where every shop has a story and where culture, commerce and community form a new sense of home.
Inside these Golden Village malls, everything from Buddhist temples, to Cantonese Radio stations to Egg Waffle and Snail Noodle shops can be found. It is in these spaces where seniors meet to exercise, children gather for music lessons, and where everyday activities like a trip to the butcher become moments of connection and belonging. In Richmond, The Chinese God of Fortune stands in for the quintessential mall Santa, and the Night Market is one of the largest open-air food courts in the world.
A celebration of the mall as a “third place,” The Golden Village is an intimate and wondrous portrait of a city that is in constant flux.
